Here’s how By Memorial Day ensures that veteran graves outside of National Cemeteries are maintained with the same honor and dignity as those in Arlington:
Our cleaners visit the gravesites and meticulously clean the headstones in strict accordance with NCA protocol, using approved tools and cleaning agents like D/2 Biological Solution. These headstones will be cleaned once every two years or as otherwise appropriate.
Our cleaners will install flag holders so that each grave can proudly display a patriotic American flag. This ensures that the service and sacrifice of each veteran are visibly honored.
Flags deteriorate over time due to weather and other elements. Our team will replace these flags twice a year to maintain a fresh and respectful appearance at each gravesite.
You’d be disappointed to know the poor condition of the landscapes around veteran gravesites outside national cemeteries. We honor these heroes by trimming back any overgrowth, ensuring a neat and respectful resting place.
Our cleaners will make regular visits to the veteran graves they are assigned to, trimming any grass or weeds encroaching upon the grave. This keeps the gravesites tidy and well-maintained.
Cleaners will be documenting graves in our directory at veterangraves.com. Every time a grave is discovered or cleaned, an updated picture will be taken as proof of discovery and care, ensuring transparency and accountability. If possible, we also aim to tell the specific veterans story in fine military detail.

By Memorial Day was founded to address the neglect of veteran graves outside National Cemeteries. Many of these graves do not receive the same care and respect as those in places like Arlington National Cemetery, and our goal is to change that through community support and dedicated services.
Our services include headstone cleaning, flag holder installation, bi-annual grave flag replacement, landscape trimming, grass and weed trimming, and ensuring a kempt appearance around the graves. All these services are carried out in strict accordance with National Cemetery Administration (NCA) protocols.
Our services are funded through donations from patriotic Americans, small business and corporate sponsors, and government grants. We operate on a donation model where contributions are made on a per veteran grave basis, costing $120-$132 per grave per year.
The NCA has a budget of $553 million annually to maintain approximately 3.4 million graves, costing $162 per grave per year. By Memorial Day provides similar care at a lower cost of $120-$132 per grave per year, which is 18-25% less than the NCA.
Our services are fulfilled by local providers who are trained and certified by By Memorial Day. These providers are compensated on a per veteran grave per visit basis, ensuring they are paid fairly for their efforts.
Individuals can support our mission by making donations, becoming sponsors, or volunteering. Volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining the gravesites and can even be compensated for their efforts. Interested individuals can learn more and sign up on our website.
Graves discovered for the first time are documented in our directory at veterangraves.com. This directory serves to record any forgotten graves and, if possible, tell the veteran’s unique story of service in fine military detail.
We aim to become a federally funded organization like the NCA, but responsible for caring for veteran graves buried outside of National Cemeteries. This includes lobbying the VA, NCA, and state governments for funding to support our mission of providing perpetual care at $132 per grave per year. It’s a massive undertaking that we are fully committed to.
